Village Veterinary Medical Center offers experience and skill in effective diagnosis, the newest treatment modalities, and use of advanced veterinary technology. Our internal medicine program incorporates the diagnosis, management, and non-surgical treatment of unusual or serious diseases in pets.

Our veterinarians graduated in the top 10% of their classes in veterinary school, receiving recognition for excellence in academia, leadership, and quality of care. Some of our doctors have even earned specialty certification by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in canine and feline medicine. These skills, combined with the latest technology, enable us to offer excellence in internal medicine diagnostics and treatment.

Our veterinary professionals are highly skilled at diagnosing and treating internal medicine disorders affecting the following systems:

  • Gastrointestinal conditions such as pancreatitis, lymphangectasia, and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Endocrine (hormonal) disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Addison’s disease, diabetes mellitus, and Cushing’s disease
  • Urinary issues such as bladder stones, chronic urinary tract infections, and sterile cystitis in cats
  • Respiratory conditions such as elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, pneumonia, collapsing trachea, and cancers of the respiratory tract
  • Liver conditions such as microvascular dysplasia, portosystemic shunts, bacterial hepatitis, and gall bladder disease
  • Hematologic disorders such as anemia, immune-mediated disease, platelet disorders, and leukemias
  • Neurologic conditions such as seizure disorders, infections or inflammatory conditions, and degenerative conditions such as degenerative myelopathy
  • Renal conditions such as kidney failure and protein losing nephropathy
  • Cardiac conditions such as high blood pressure, murmurs, and arrhythmias

As we work through the diagnosis of internal medicine conditions, we always discuss with you the step-by-step process. We systematically work through your pet’s individual condition, discussing cost, prognosis, and treatment modalities as we move forward.

Our veterinary diagnostic tools include both in-house and referred laboratories, ultrasound, endoscopy, and radiology.

Indicators of an Internal Problem

Signs of internal metabolic disease in your pet could include increased water consumption, excessive appetite, weight loss despite a great appetite, weight gain, excessive panting, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, lethargy, or urination accidents. Some pets also experience skin conditions such as repeat infections or hair loss due to metabolic disease.

Veterinary Intensive Care

For patients requiring hospitalization and critical care support, our highly trained licensed veterinary technicians provide nursing in our intensive care unit. Our ICU offers specialized care such as intravenous fluids, feeding tube management, intravenous medications, plasma and blood transfusions, pain management, and advanced nutritional support. This proactive approach allows us to identify and stay ahead of potentially progressive conditions such as shock, anaphylactic reactions, fevers, and anorexia. Our staff is also trained in CPCR should the need arise.

Our entire staff participates in rounds twice daily to review the status of all pets in our care, including both hospitalized and boarding pets. This team communication extends from the front desk to ICU to the boarding wards, ensuring cohesive continuity of care for all pets. Rounds also allows all doctors to be aware of every hospitalized case, so input from all veterinarians is considered in patient management. The doctors frequently collaborate to review blood work, X-rays, and other laboratory results. This level of excellence in communication ensures our patients are getting the highest quality care we can provide.

If your pet is hospitalized, we communicate with you daily and update you on your pet’s progress, status, and any diagnostics that may be scheduled for that day. We also update our clients regarding costs and give estimates when surgery or ongoing hospitalization may be required. Our goal is excellence in patient care as well as excellent client service at all times. We are an open door facility, welcoming visitation between you and your pet.

If your pet has been diagnosed with a specific illness, we offer educational resources so you can fully understand the disorder, treatment plan, and prognosis. We will email or print copies of blood work, educational articles, X-rays, or educational videos.

Never hesitate to ask us questions at any time. Write your questions down as you think of them. Bring the list with you to your appointments or email questions to the veterinarians, to ensure we are meeting your communication needs.

The Highest Standards in Veterinary Care

We are accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) for maintaining the highest standards in veterinary care. We are reviewed regularly to ensure adherence to these standards.
